Claude Code vs Cursor vs Copilot

I’ve used all three on real projects. Not test drives. Not tutorials. Production code across Scouter, Triumfit, Lucid, Logline, and this site. I have opinions, but they’re grounded in actual use, not hype.
Here’s the honest breakdown.
What each tool actually is
These three tools solve different problems. Comparing them head-to-head is like comparing a wrench, a drill, and a CNC machine. They’re all tools. They’re not the same tool.
GitHub Copilot is an inline completion engine. It lives in your editor, watches what you’re typing, and suggests the next line (or next block). It’s reactive — you drive, it assists.
Cursor is an IDE with AI built in. It can chat about your code, edit files through conversation, and operate across multiple files. It’s collaborative — you and the AI work on the same thing in the same window.
Claude Code is a terminal-based autonomous agent. You give it a task, it executes the task, you review the output. It’s delegative — you scope, it builds, you review.
Completion vs. conversation vs. delegation. That’s the fundamental difference.
What each tool is best at
Copilot excels at flow state coding. When you’re in the zone, writing code yourself, and you just need the boilerplate filled in — Copilot is unbeatable. It completes the function you’re writing. It generates the test case you’re setting up. It fills in the repetitive parts so you can focus on the interesting parts.
I still use Copilot when I’m writing code directly. If I’m setting up a new pattern or working through a design problem in code, Copilot’s inline suggestions keep me moving without breaking concentration.
Cursor excels at exploration and targeted edits. When you’re staring at unfamiliar code and need to understand it, Cursor’s chat-with-your-codebase approach is strong. “What does this function do?” “How is this component used?” “Refactor this to use the new API.” It’s good for focused, interactive work on a single codebase.
I used Cursor heavily when I was first building Lucid. Lots of “how should I structure this?” conversations. Helpful for working through design decisions with immediate code-level feedback.
Claude Code excels at autonomous execution. Give it a spec, walk away, come back to a completed feature. No IDE needed. No watching. It runs in a terminal, produces a diff, and waits for your review. This is where my workflow lives now, and it’s the reason I can run 8 sessions at once.
The core tradeoff: interactivity vs. independence
Copilot and Cursor want you present. They’re better when you’re actively engaged with the code. That’s a feature — they’re interactive tools designed for interactive work.
Claude Code doesn’t want you present. It’s better when you write a clear spec and leave. That’s also a feature — it’s an autonomous tool designed for delegated work.
This distinction matters more than any benchmark or feature comparison. The question isn’t “which is smarter?” It’s “how do you want to work?”
If you write most of your own code and want an assistant that speeds you up: Copilot or Cursor.
If you want to scope tasks and review output while the AI does the implementation: Claude Code.
When to use each
Here’s how they fit into an actual week:
Use Copilot when:
- You’re writing code in flow state and want autocomplete that actually works
- You’re implementing a pattern you already know and just need speed
- You’re writing tests alongside code and want the assertions generated
- You’re in an editor all day doing hands-on work
Use Cursor when:
- You need to understand a codebase you didn’t write
- You want to iterate on a design through conversation
- You’re making targeted edits across a few files
- You want to see changes applied in your editor immediately
Use Claude Code when:
- You have a scoped task with clear inputs and outputs
- You want to work on something else while the AI implements
- You’re running multiple tasks across multiple projects
- You care more about throughput than interactivity
Why Claude Code won for parallel work
My workflow involves moving 6–8 projects forward every day. That’s the job. One person, multiple codebases, constant forward motion.
For this specific use case, Claude Code wins on three axes.
Terminal-native. Each session is an iTerm2 tab. I can have 8 tabs open, each with an independent agent working on a different project. No IDE per project. No window management. Just tabs. The 8 sessions post walks through the physical setup.
Spec-driven. I paste a spec, the agent works. I don’t need to point at files in a GUI, drag selections, or have a back-and-forth conversation. The spec is the complete instruction. This matters at scale — when you’re scoping 8 tasks, the handoff needs to be fast and complete.
Runs independently. Once I launch a task, I don’t need to interact with it until review. Cursor and Copilot are better tools if you’re sitting with them. Claude Code is the better tool if you’re not. Since my workflow is “scope 8 things and review 8 things,” the tool that runs without me wins.
No IDE dependency. I can run Claude Code on a server, on a Raspberry Pi, over SSH. It’s a CLI. This matters less for most people but it means my workflow isn’t tied to a specific editor or specific machine.
What Claude Code is worse at
Being honest here because I think the comparison is only useful if it’s real.
Quick inline edits. If I want to rename a variable across a file, Copilot or Cursor is faster. Opening a terminal session, writing a spec for a rename, reviewing the diff — that’s overhead for a 10-second task. For small, quick edits, an editor-integrated tool wins.
Visual diffs in-editor. Cursor shows you the proposed changes inline, in context, with syntax highlighting. You can accept or reject individual hunks. Claude Code gives you a terminal diff. It’s readable, but it’s not as ergonomic as seeing changes in your editor with full context.
Exploratory work. When I don’t know what I want yet — when I’m poking at a problem, trying approaches, thinking through the code — Cursor’s conversational approach is better. Claude Code wants a spec. If you don’t have a spec, you don’t have a task, and Claude Code doesn’t have much to do.
Onboarding to new codebases. Cursor’s ability to chat about code and navigate the codebase through conversation is genuinely helpful when you’re learning a new project. Claude Code assumes you know the codebase well enough to write specific specs.
The honest take
Use what fits your workflow.
If you’re a solo dev working on one project, spending most of your day in an editor, Cursor is probably the best fit. It’s the most helpful companion for focused, interactive development.
If you’re pair-programming with AI — thinking through problems together, iterating on designs — Cursor’s conversational model is strong.
If you’re managing multiple projects and want to maximize throughput, Claude Code’s autonomous execution model is what I’d recommend. The best practices post covers how to set it up properly.
If you just want better autocomplete while you code, Copilot is the lightest-weight option and it’s good at what it does.
I use Claude Code for 90% of my work because my work is parallel execution across multiple projects. That’s my workflow. If your workflow is different, your tool choice should be too.
The worst thing you can do is pick a tool based on hype. Try each one on a real task — not a demo, a real task in your actual codebase. You’ll know within a day which one fits how you think.
